Working in Bude

Bude and north Cornwall: exposed coast, rural hinterland and a long letting season

Bude is the northern edge of our Cornwall coverage, reached up the A39 from the studio near Truro. It combines a compact coastal town with a wide rural hinterland running towards Stratton, Kilkhampton, Morwenstow and the Devon border at Marsland.

The coast here is genuinely severe. Bude, Widemouth and Crackington face the Atlantic with no shelter, and properties along that stretch take salt and wind-driven rain for most of the year. Inland the character shifts quickly to farmhouses, cottages and conversions with private drainage and long approaches.

A substantial share of the coastal stock lets through the season, so programmes have to fit between bookings and specifications have to survive heavy turnover, the same discipline we apply to second homes elsewhere in Cornwall.

Where in and around Bude we work

  • Bude, Summerleaze and Crooklets
  • Stratton and Poughill
  • Widemouth Bay and Crackington Haven
  • Kilkhampton and Morwenstow
  • Marhamchurch and Week St Mary
  • Boscastle and the Tintagel approach

Bude property types we know

  • Clifftop and sea-view coastal houses
  • Victorian and Edwardian town property
  • Farmhouses and rural cottages inland
  • Barn and outbuilding conversions
  • Holiday lets and managed second homes
  • Bungalows and post-war housing being remodelled

What clients here ask for

  • Durable specification for heavily let properties
  • Boot rooms and utilities for beach and farm kit
  • Kitchens that seat a large group in season
  • Bathrooms with extraction that copes with turnover
  • Fitted storage in low-ceilinged cottages
  • Remote project management for owners living away

Why Studio Seven

What we can actually claim about working in Bude

Verifiable facts only. If we cannot evidence a number, we do not print it.

A Cornwall studio, not a national franchise

We work from Cornelly House, School Hill, Shortlanesend, just outside Truro. Bude is served by the same studio and the same people who draw the room.

15 years in the KBB sector

Our founder holds a degree in interior architecture and has 15 years in kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. The studio works with homeowners and developers on bespoke projects.

KBSA membership

Membership of the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association gives you an independent standard to hold us to, and a route of recourse if something is not right.

Two-year workmanship guarantee

Installation carries a two-year workmanship guarantee backed through KBSA membership, on top of the manufacturer warranties on Schüller, Novelle and Omega cabinetry.

£5,000,000 public liability insurance

The cover level developers, architects and main contractors normally require before trades are allowed on site, in place for private houses too.

Full 3D visualisation before you commit

Every room is drawn in Winner 3D from your own eye height, so the layout, the finishes and the lighting are agreed on screen rather than discovered on site.

What Bude throws at a build

The problems Bude homes cause, and how the design answers them

Every location has a predictable set of failures worth designing out before a single unit is ordered. These are the ones we plan around here.

Atlantic exposure with no shelter

The coast between Widemouth and Morwenstow is as exposed as anywhere we work. Salt reaches internal surfaces, driven rain finds every unsealed edge, and heating that runs only when the property is occupied leaves condensation to do its work all winter.

Specification is the defence: moisture-resistant substrates in wet zones, sealed edging, ironmongery suited to the exposure and extraction ducted outside and sized to the room rather than fitted for convenience.

  • Moisture-resistant substrates and sealed edges in wet zones
  • Ironmongery and fixings chosen for severe coastal exposure
  • Extraction sized to volume, ducted out rather than recirculating
  • Finishes selected for heavy seasonal use

Letting seasons and narrow installation windows

A property earning income through the season has a fixed window for work, and an overrun costs the owner directly. Access also tightens considerably in peak weeks.

We work to a dated programme, book trades and deliveries against it, and run absent-owner projects through our project management service with a foreman on site and weekly video updates.

Rural hinterland: services, access and older fabric

Inland of Bude, private drainage, oil heating and older electrical installations are standard, and approaches are often long, narrow and unmade. Older cottages bring thick walls, uneven floors and low ceilings.

All of it is recorded at survey - drainage falls, heating, capacity, access, real dimensions - and designed around, with tolerance planned at drawing stage rather than improvised on installation day.

  • Drainage type and falls confirmed before layouts are fixed
  • Electrical capacity and heating recorded at survey
  • Access and turning assessed for unmade rural approaches
  • Scribes, fillers and tolerances designed in at drawing stage

Our process

The same five steps for every Bude project

The sequence does not change with the postcode. It is what keeps a project predictable.

  1. Design consultation

How the household uses the space, the state of the building, your budget position and timescale, and an honest answer on whether the project suits us.

  2. Survey and measured drawings

Measured as built, with structure, services, floor levels and any heritage constraints recorded. In period and converted property this stage decides everything that follows.

  3. Winner 3D design and specification

You see the room in three dimensions from your own eye height, with cabinetry, finishes, lighting and appliances specified: and you change it on screen, not on site.

  4. Ordering and programme

Schüller, Novelle or Omega cabinetry ordered against a dated programme, with trades and deliveries booked around access, other contractors and the building’s own sequence.

  5. Installation and handover

One studio installs and stays responsible, with weekly updates. Handover includes the snagging walk-through, the two-year workmanship guarantee and manufacturer warranties.

Bude questions

Answers for Bude clients

Do you work in Bude?

Yes. Bude is the northern end of our Cornwall coverage, and we work across the town, Stratton, Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven, Kilkhampton and Morwenstow.

Can you fit the work between holiday bookings in Bude?

Yes. We work to a dated programme with trades and deliveries booked against it, which is what makes a fixed window between bookings realistic.

How do you specify for such an exposed coastline?

Moisture-resistant substrates in wet zones, sealed edging, ironmongery suited to the exposure and extraction sized to the room and ducted outside. Intermittently heated properties need that discipline more, not less.

Do you cover the rural area inland of Bude?

Yes, Marhamchurch, Week St Mary, Kilkhampton and the surrounding parishes. Rural properties get drainage, heating, electrical capacity and access checked at survey before the design is fixed.

What does a kitchen cost in Bude?

Kitchen projects start at £12,000. Beyond that the figure follows the room size, the cabinetry range - Schüller, Novelle or Omega - worktop material, appliances and any building work. You are given a specified cost against an approved 3D design.

Are you insured and accredited to work in Bude homes?

We hold £5,000,000 public liability insurance and are KBSA members, and our installation work carries a two-year workmanship guarantee backed through that membership.

Can I visit a showroom from Bude?

Our Truro showroom is being built and opens in 2027. Until then the design consultation happens at your property and in our studio, so the specification is made against your own light and ceiling heights.

Do you offer an emergency or same-day service?

No. We are a design-led KBB studio rather than a repair service. Work is designed, programmed and installed to agreed dates; if an issue arises with our own installation, the two-year workmanship guarantee covers it.

Can you coordinate with our builder or architect?

Yes. Much of our work sits inside a wider renovation. Our project management service puts a foreman on the ground alongside the other trades and reports back to you weekly by video.

Can you manage a Bude project while I am living elsewhere?

Yes. That is what the Complete Service is for: design, installation and project management under one studio, with a foreman on site and weekly video updates so you do not need to travel to make decisions.
